Narrative description of the project:In Indonesia, the two largest religious organizations are the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and the Muhammadiyah.  There are also a number of smaller Islamic organizations operating in all regions in the country. Both the NU and the Muhammadiyah, together with many other smaller Islamic organizations, provide religious schools generally known as Madrassahs.  “Madrassah” has two meanings in Indonesia, a day-school that provides Islamic instruction and a school within a pesantren (an Islamic boarding school) that provides the non-religious portion of the curriculum.Given the important roles of religious organizations in Indonesia, the proposed study of how religious organizations impact on the effectiveness of local governance is a new and exciting research agenda.  The collaborative project aims are :(1) Analyze religious organizations affect the level of social capital in a community

– The activities of religious organizations that have strong impacts on the level of social capital

– The aspects of social capital that are most affected by religious organizations

– Community characteristics matter in the way religious organizations affect social capital

(2) Analyze religious organizations, and in particular their provision of Madrassahs, affect local governance

(3) Impose concrete policy lessons can we derive regarding how the state and religious organizations can work together to improve the effectiveness of local governance

Description of actual services provided by your staff within the assignment:The collaborative project will consist of the following stages:Stage One: Classification of Madrassahs in order to define the types of Madrassahs that the research will focus onStage Two: Plan for data collection and application for fundingThe researchers will carefully plan for data collection based on the information gathered in Stage One.  The researchers will design the questionnaire, and determine the sample size and sampling procedureThe research collect data from 50 villages in 10 provinces in Indonesia. For each village, 35 respondents from 26 households were surveyed. This results in 1750 respondents from 1300 households.Stage Three: Data collectionResearchers will employ and train interviewers.  Researchers and interviewers will then collect and process the data.

Stage Four: Data analysis

This stage involves using the data to empirically test the hypotheses based on the research questions.  Researchers involved will employ rigorous micro-econometric methods to empirically analyse the data to try and understand the impacts of religious organizations on social capital.

Stage Five: Dissemination

The project aims to disseminate the empirical results and policy implications to the government of Indonesia, religious NGOs and other relevant organizations, governments of other countries, and bilateral and multilateral organisations such as the Asian Development Bank.  The dissemination will take the forms of working papers, presentations at national and international seminars and conferences, and academic journal articles.  Policy lessons derived from the project should be useful to government policy makers, religious NGOs, and donors both in Indonesia and other countries.

Narrative description of the project:  Research in the field of non-cash payment instruments related with the development of the product will facilitate financial transactions more efficient, safe, and easy to use by the public. The scope of this research consists of identifying the market potential both in terms of the readiness of the general public, business and banking, as well as the feasibility of the application of non-cash payment products in Indonesia.The purpose of the research on the perception of non-cash payments in Indonesia:1) Identify the characteristics and behaviors of the community and users of non-cash transactions and entrepreneurs.
2) Describe the perceptions, preferences and behavior towards non-cash payment systems and their constraints faced.
3) Analyze the factors and determinants forming preferences and behavior of the community and entrepreneurs for products of non-cash payment instruments.
Description of actual services provided by your staff within the assignment:The research aims to provide non-cash payment instruments that will facilitate financial transactions. In achieving the purpose of research, researchers will use a template within the scope of the case study.
The output of this research is to develop such a grand design of efforts using non-cash payment system, and comprehensive information on the potential characteristics in each region.Research activities, consisting of:
– Literature review;
– Survey;
– Analysis of descriptive statistics.The stages to achieve the research objectives:
The first phase: to collect information on the pattern of perceptions, preferences, and behavior of service users of non-cash payment instruments.
The second phase: to clarify the general pattern resulting from the first phase of the survey, then will be used as a basis to develop “potential model” development of non-cash payment instruments.
The third stage: based on the model of the mapping potential per area into various typologies, such as “high”, “medium” and “low”
